MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging and is used to produce detailed images of your heart. It does this with a strong magnetic field and radiowaves. MRI is a very safe test and there is zero exposure to radiation. PREPARATION No preparation is required for a cardiac MRI. Food, water and medication can be taken as per your usual routine. In order to perform the test, clothing from the waist up needs to be removed to gain access to the chest. A hospital gown is then worn for the test. Ladies, for ease, we suggest wearing a two piece outfit in preference to a dress. Please bring any previous films to your appointment and inform us if you suffer from severe claustrophobia as a sedative can be arranged to help you feel more comfortable. TEST LENGTH Allow approximately 1 hour for your cardiac MRI appointment. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment. MEDICARE REBATE AVAILABLE Yes a Medicare rebate is available for certain specialist referrals. PROCEDURE Hearts 1st performs Cardiac MRI with Qld X-Ray at Greenslopes Private Hospital. The MRI technologist will position you on the table of the MRI scanner. Adhesive dots will be placed on your chest where thin leads will be connected to a monitor which allows us to observe your heart rhythm throughout the MRI. Headphones will be placed over your ears so that you can listen to music and communicate with the technologist via a two way intercom during the procedure. A small needle will be placed into a vein in your arm so that a contrast agent (dye) can be injected. The MRI table will move into the circular magnet when the examination begins. During the MRI you must remain still, and we will instruct you to hold your breath for up to 10-20 seconds at a time. The MRI machine will make a thumping and humming sound when it is scanning. We understand that all medical examinations are accompanied by some level of anxiety. The staff will make every effort to ensure you are as comfortable as possible throughout. RESULTS Your report will be sent directly to your referring doctor, usually within 24 hours. You do not need to wait for the report or any films, videos or CD’s. |
